Do you hear that? That’s the ripe ol’ age of 31 calling my name come December. Little does *she* know, I’ve ticked another one (“another one,” in my best DJ Khalid voice) off my ‘shit I’m 30’ bucket list! And I got to thinking… Maybe you should too? Here’s why you need to drop everything and road trip around Iceland, right now.

Why You Need to Drop Everything and Road Trip Around Iceland

You will learn something new about yourself

Through driving in Iceland, I learned how resilient I am when a challenge presents itself. Enter the tales of the ‘manual transmission.’ It’s like riding a bike, they said. It will be easy, they said. It was one of the most stressful things I’ve ever done in my life. But you have no idea how good it felt to conquer that manual car after not having driven manual for 15 years. Each day I got better and better at shifting, to the point where I was actually having fun!

You will be a kid again

Camping, adventuring, drinking from waterfalls, taking photos, petting animals, eating fast food (and spilling in the car), being dirty and smelly, the list goes on… The only thing good about actually being an adult when you’re busy acting like a kid, is busting out the wine at the campsite. Other than that, a road trip through Iceland is sure to make you relive your childhood. It’s just you, the open road, and your next stop.

You will make memories that last forever

I cannot tell you the number of times we laughed at the stupid things we did. Case in point: trying to reverse the car while the emergency brake was on (literally about seven times). And trying to adventure out of the car in the pouring rain which felt like needles going into our skin and nearly getting blown off a cliff. Have you ever had your face hurt from laughing so hard? That sums up a road trip around Iceland.

Why You Need to Drop Everything and Road Trip Around Iceland

You will see the most beautiful things you’ve ever seen

Never have I ever seen so much beauty in one place. One moment you’re on the moon or on some deserted planet, and another, you see a familiar sight that reminds you of home. I wrote about how Iceland completely changed the way I think about traveling, and I have to say that road tripping through Iceland has been one of the most profound, life-changing moments in terms of experiences. You will never ever see or do anything more beautiful. I promise.

You will be grateful you did it now

I’m not gonna front, road tripping around Iceland and sleeping in a camper van isn’t the easiest thing on your body. That’s where the ‘drop everything’ from the title of this editorial comes from. If you’re going to road trip through Iceland and sleep in a van, you need to go now. Don’t wait until age starts creeping up. Be on the lookout for cheap tickets and as Nike says, just do it.

Who’s been thinking about a trip to Iceland?

  2. I said on your previous post that you really made me want to revisit Iceland and now you most DEFINITELY make me want to add in a road trip! We sporadically hired a car and went chasing the Northern Lights (to no avail) and it was a pretty scary journey but it was honestly SUCH an experience so I can only imagine how it was for you guys!

    1. Oh man!! We missed the northern lights. Sooo jealous you got to chase them. Either way, I’ve never seen such beauty from a van. It was almost overwhelming.
