It’s official. I have a special love affair with Berlin. Last March I got to visit lovely gritty Berlin, which I photographed extensively. So when THE BARN Coffee Roasters Berlin reached out to send me a few samples, I got my favorite mug ready to go!

The BARN is both a roastery and a small chain of coffee shops in Berlin, Germany. They have a large flagship store/roastery, which I unfortunately didn’t get to visit on my short trip to Berlin. I did get to visit their ‘little barn’, as it has been dubbed, and I had the most wonderful experience.

We Met Last March

I remember it was an unusually sunny day in March for Berlin standards, and I was wandering around the gallery district looking for a place to settle in and get a cup of coffee. Normally my coffee shops are all planned out, but this one was an emergency. I needed to de-coat from the hot sun, relax my feet, and grab a much-needed latte and snack. I spotted the little barn and decided to check it out, not really thinking about photos or blogging or anything.

The barista was super nice given the fact that I didn’t speak a word of German. He even chatted me up for a little bit and we had a laugh or two. I sat outside and enjoyed a latte and a ‘full vacation mode’ cheesecake. It wasn’t until after THE BARN had recently reached out to me that I figured out I had actually visited their cafe in the gallery district.

Anyway, that’s my little history with THE BARN. Now it’s time for some serious coffee talk!

A Little Background on THE BARN

“THE BARN is a leading Specialty Coffee Roastery in Europe, known for our uncompromised dedication to quality we only work with premium coffees from sustainable and traceable farming. Our coffee beans are served by many leading coffee shops and home brewers across the globe: From Vancouver, via New York, Paris, London, Dubai to Japan.

All we do is handmade with attention to detail: Highest bean qualities, fresh in season, lightly roasted in small batches, fully traceable, no blends. We also operate three of the highest quality coffee bars in Berlin. THE BARN represents the Specialty Coffee Movement at the highest level since 2010.”

THE BARN so kindly sent me over their sample box, which contained six sample bags of their current coffee range. Not to mention a cute tote bag and some light reading material. This month they partnered with Department of Brewology on the very first ever ‘coffee boxset‘. I believe they’re sold out now, but kudos to them for creating a perfect partnership!

Also, can I just pause and take a moment to say that interacting with THE BARN has been such a great experience! You guys know I am super picky about doing collaborations and exchanging work, and I only do them when I truly believe in the brand. I have loved every second of chatting with Pia and the team, and I admire their approach to coffee.

On to the Coffee

I tried the various beans from different origins throughout the week. Each sample bag creates two cups of coffee. So if I went through these in a week, well, you can do the math (#coffeeislife). My favorite of the bunch was the La Montaña, which I could smell just by putting my nose to the bag. This one had the perfect amount of body for me with its jam and black currant tasting notes.

The rest of the samples included beans from Brazil, Costa Rice, and Honduras. So a really nice mix of the South American regions. I also really enjoyed the Fazenda Um, an espresso roast that was perfectly bold yet creamy.

The sample box is the absolute perfect gift for any coffee lover. What makes it super intriguing is that the beans are roasted in Berlin. It’s kind of neat to see a ‘Colombia’ sticker on the packaging, as well as a ‘roasted in Berlin’ stamp.

I definitely have a new found love for third wave coffee in Berlin. I don’t often visit cities back to back, or even twice for that matter (unless it’s London), but I 100% want to make it back to Berlin someday. The history, the amazingly sweet people, the gritty personality-filled city, and wonderful specialty coffee culture are all reasons to visit again and again.

If you’re interested in shopping their offerings, I would definitely recommend getting the box of samples. They’ve included a great tasting range, so you’ll be able to taste a variety of flavors. Until next time, Berlin.

*A special thank you to Pia and THE BARN for the samples!

  1. First of all, gorgeous photos! I’m not a coffee connoisseur by any stretch so I don’t think I would be able to tell the difference between the different beans, but I can totally see a coffee fan loving this box! The brand sounds really genuine as well, it definitely makes me want to visit their cafe if I’m ever in Berlin!

  3. I’ve heard so many good things about Berlin. My brother visited last year and said it was a blast! And of course, everywhere we go, coffee is our life. I really appreciate any company that values sourcing it’s products sustainably. That is hugely important to us. We’ll definitely put this on the list of places to scope when we finally get there!
