10 Things you Should do Every Time you Travel Solo

While traveling solo definitely has its ups and downs, it’s also full of growth, learning, and discovery. If you want to make the most out of your time traveling solo, then I recommend these 10 things you should do every time you travel solo. Don’t forget to snag your free Paris, London, and New York checklists at the bottom of this post!

10 Things you Should do Every Time you Travel Solo

1. Learn four new words

It’s always a good idea to learn a few new words before you embark on a solo trip. Make sure you learn the necessities: hi, please, thank you, bye. Those words will go a long way! Plus now you know four new words. If you already know those words, try four more!

2. Do something spontaneous

Though I happen to be an obsessive planner, I always leave one day in my solo travels to do something spontaneous (which sort of defeats the purpose, I know). It can be anything from walking the streets and getting lost, to seeing a movie alone or just staying in and watching tv.

3. Buy something to remember your trip

I don’t buy as many trinkets now that I’m older, but I always recommend buying one small item that commemorates your trip. It’s always good to make it something meaningful too. I recommend hitting up the local flea market and buying some old jewelry, or something to thoughtfully add to your home!

4. Make a new friend

Make a new friend on your solo adventure, even if just for a second. Say hi to someone or start a conversation at a restaurant with another couple. I’ve had loads of conversations with other people on my travels and it always makes me feel less lonely.

5. Treat yourself

This could be a fancy dinner or a beautiful pair of shoes you’ve been wanting (psst, European designers are generally cheaper in Europe). I try to find one thing that I want to treat myself to while I’m away. After all, you deserve it!

6. Make a meal

There’s nothing like a little night in spent cooking in a foreign country. Now, this is infinitely easier if you’re in an Airbnb, but you can always grab some items from the store and have yourself a picnic in a nearby park as well.

7. Photograph yourself

It’s not vain, I promise you. What’s a person supposed to do when there’s no one there to take your photo? Don’t feel stupid or narcissistic. Photos are a great way of looking back and reminiscing, and you deserve to give that to yourself no matter what anyone else thinks.

8. Take a tour

Had to throw in the obvious! Always try to take a tour while visiting another city. It’s honestly one of the greatest ways to meet people, learn about history, and just let loose and laugh (tour guides are generally fun people).

9. Do something challenging

“But Emily, is it not challenging enough just traveling solo?” Most of the time it is. But for some experienced solo travelers, sometimes you still have to find ways to challenge yourself and get out of your comfort zone. Believe me, it will help you to grow so much!

10. Use the public transit

Using public transportation is the best way to get to know a city. It’s also the cheapest! Do not be intimidated by the lines and directions. Stay calm, google what you need to, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you want an activity that will help you grow and make you more independent, public transit is the way to go.

  1. Amazing photos! Great tips, I went once on a trip alone and I made there some friends, I still keep in contact with one of the friends I met there because she lives 10 minutes away from my home and even lately her baby girl was born so it’s very sentimental to meet someone 8 years ago and now see how much time has passed and that we still keep contact 🙂

    1. It’s so much fun! I am actually not adventurous and I love structure haha. It’s taken me deeply out of my comfort zone.

  2. I love these tips for solo travelers. YES on doing spontaneous things! It feels great and kind of pushes you out of your own comfort zone. I am always game with treating yourself, hehe. I haven’t used public transit on my own before – though this is a cost-efficient way to get around. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thanks, Nancy! I always try to use public transit. It’s kind of fun figuring it out! You always feel so good when you nail it.

  3. I love your point of not feeling vain if you take your own photo, I’m always grateful to have someone take my photo so try to do the same for others if I see them alone. Even though I’ve yet to travel on my own I think a lot of these tips work for couples or families too! I definitely want to get better at doing something spontaneous as I’m SUCH a planner!

  4. This is such a great list, Emily. I LOVE that you included “make a new friend” in here. Some of my best memories of solo travel involve new friends I have made along the way!

  5. Ah I love this post so much, I definitely agree there’s ups and downs to solo travel but I think it’s such a great thing to do at least once! I love treating myself to something that will remind me of my trip (and also to a fancy meal every once in a while) Natalie x

  6. These are all great, Emily! I can say that I was able to check all of these off during my last solo trip. It definitely helps to make the best out of the trip. Have a wonderful week!

  7. I’ll be travelling solo this year to Australia, and these are such great tips! The fear of feeling lonely is quite daunting, but I’m really hoping I make new friends and travel with them.

    1. I totally get that feeling! There are actually lots of female solo travel groups on Facebook. You might check some of those! Girls meet up all the time. 🙂
